Chocolate Coffee Smoothie That Gets Me Out of Bed Every Morning

If you are like me, you need some coffee in the morning. It wakes you up and give you that energy to start the day. Since it is such an important part of my morning routine, I couldn’t give it up. But after sometime, I wanted to experiment with a little bit.

That’s when I started mixing it with other ingredients and reached peak with this Chocolate Coffee Smoothie.

Chocolate and coffee bring out the best in each other, and both have a good dose of Antioxidants. Put some banana in the mix, for sweetness and sneaking some fruit into your breakfast and you have a winner combination.

Chocolate Coffee Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of strong coffee (or espresso)
  • 1/4 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 ripe, frozen banana (the frozen banana is what gives this the texture of a smoothie)
  • 1 cup of milk (can be replaced with almond milk for a dairy free smoothie)
  • Chocolate chip

Instructions:

  • First, let’s make sure to brew a proper coffee. You can use whatever coffee you like, but make sure to set your coffee maker with 1 tablespoon of coffee for each cup of water. This will make strong black coffee, ideal for this.
  • If you have a capsule coffee maker, just brew 1 cup of espresso and you are good to go. Let it cool down a little. (In case you want a more flavorful coffee, use a burr coffee grinder to extract coffee right away)
  • Take your banana out of the freezer and cut it in pieces, just to help the blending (they don’t have to be small pieces, just enough so your blender can run smoothly). I always keep some bananas in the freezer for recipes like smoothies, banana ice cream and even cakes.
  • Put all the prepared ingredients on a blender and blend on the slowest speed until smooth. You can adjust the texture using more pieces of frozen bananas for a thicker smoothie or more milk (or the substitute you are using) for a thinner smoothie.

Chocolate Coffee Smoothie – Dessert Version

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of coffee
  • 1/4 cup of cocoa powder
  • 80g of chocolate (higher cocoa percentage is advisable; milk chocolate here can be too sweet)
  • 1 ripe, frozen banana
  • 1 cup of half-and-half (can be replaced with almond milk or coconut milk as well)

Instructions:

  • Follow the same first step of the first recipe, but this time, combine the hot coffee with the hot chocolate while still hot. This will help to melt the chocolate and it will blend better with the other ingredients.
  • Cut the banana in pieces and put it on the blender with the other ingredients. Again, no need for small pieces, just enough to blend.
  • Blend until smooth on low speed. This version should be richer by the addition of chocolate and the half-and-half. If you want a little thinner, add some more milk while it is blending until it reaches the desired texture.

This smoothie is full of fiber and antioxidants from the coffee and chocolate. The first version is a little healthier, but the second one is as healthy as a treat can be (and it also doubles down as a great hot chocolate recipe when heated).
